Try Before You Buy
If you're a new customer, I recommend trying before you buy to see if the work I would carry out on your manuscript is exactly what you're looking for. I will assess a sample of your work and, if applicable, carry out a trial edit or proofread. However, rest assured, if I don't feel I can help at this time, I will respectfully explain my reasons and what direction I think you could take your work in next, or redirect you to someone who could serve you better. Your book is the number one priority.
Get started by sending a 5000-word sample, preferably from the middle of your manuscript, to: tina@bookproof.co.uk, and I'll get back to you within two working days.

Manuscript Review
Are you finding it difficult to distance yourself from your manuscript in order to assess if it's working or how it might be received by readers? A manuscript review provides an objective and detailed breakdown of all aspects of your narrative. Presented in a helpful, supportive manner, it identifies strengths and weaknesses, and suggests potential areas for improvement.
During a manuscript review, I break the narrative down into specific areas in order to analyse whether these areas are working effectively. These areas are: point of view (including narrative voice, style, language), characters and arcs (protagonists, antagonists, and stakes), dialogue, setting and scene, timeline, plot progression and arc (including structure and pace), theme, genre, and suitability for the target audience. I examine how these elements perform both independently and as a unit in realising the story's potential and aiding the reading experience.
As an author myself, I know how nerve-jangling it can be to transition your work from the safety of your office desk to the wide-open (and often harsh) public arena; as such, please be assured the feedback document I provide will be respectful and supportive, but it will also be honest and pragmatic, to help you develop your manuscript and tell the story you want to tell in the best possible way.
Copy-Editing
Have you self-edited your work but still feel it needs an objective eye and some further attention? A copy-edit will examine the narrative for continuity, clarity and flow. Inconsistences and areas of concern or confusion are flagged, re-worded or re-structured accordingly.
A copy-edit (also sometimes known as a line edit) involves some re-wording and sentence re-structuring to ensure your intended message translates seamlessly to the reader. However, retaining your narrative "voice" remains the priority. An edit can be vital for capturing errors that have slipped into your story which would jar your reader's attention and disrupt their enjoyment of your novel. This means closely observing all aspects of your narrative, including plot, point of view, characterisation and setting, and correcting or notifying you of any inconsistencies or areas of confusion. If you are writing in a series, and hire my services for each book, the copy-edit will also ensure consistency across all the instalments.
I will work with your manuscript in Microsoft Word, using Word's Track Changes facility. This way, you can choose whether to accept or decline the suggested changes I've made. If you're unsure how to use Track Changes, I will talk you through it.
Should you have a preferred style guide you wish to adhere to (a list of formatting and stylistic choices), I will implement it accordingly in the copy-editing process. If you do not have a style guide, I will compile one for you free of charge, based on your manuscript's most consistent choices.
Proofreading
Is your novel edited and almost good to go? A proofread is the final check of your fully edited novel from start to finish prior to publication. It weeds out any remaining errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, layout and style, and checks for consistency throughout. This final stage of the writing process ensures your book is well-presented and professional.
A proofread can include checking capitalisation, hyphenation, headings, typeface, spacing, spelling and numerical style, headers and footers, tables, illustrations and their corresponding captions, references, cross-references and in-text citations, bibliographies, front matter and back matter. For e-books, if required, particular attention will be paid to formatting to ensure compliancy with your chosen e-book publisher, and thus a smooth transition when you upload your manuscript. If you are writing in a series, and hire my services for each book, the proofread will also ensure consistency across all the instalments.
